How to Measure Your Garage Door

1

Measure Door Height

Measure the total height of the door from floor to top. Standard heights are 7', 8', 9', or 10'.

2

Measure Door Width

Measure the width of the door opening. Common widths are 8', 9', 10', 12', 16', or 18'.

3

Check Wire Size

Look at the existing spring. The wire diameter is usually printed on the cone or can be measured with calipers.

4

Measure Spring Length

Measure the spring from one end to the other (not including cones). This is the coil length when relaxed.

5

Check Inside Diameter

The ID is the inside diameter of the spring coils. Standard is 1.75" or 2". Measure across the inside of the coil.

Safety Tips

WARNING: Garage door springs are under extreme tension

ALWAYS use proper winding bars — never use screwdrivers or improvised tools
Springs are under extreme tension — a single spring can exert 100+ lbs of force
Wear safety glasses and gloves at all times during installation
Never stand directly in front of the winding cone while adjusting
If unsure, hire a professional — garage door springs can cause serious injury
Always replace springs in pairs for balanced operation
Disconnect the garage door opener before working on springs
Ensure the door is fully closed and locked before removing old springs

Quick Installation Tips

Replace in Pairs

Always replace both springs even if only one broke. This ensures balanced tension and prevents the second spring from breaking soon after.

Count the Turns

When winding new springs, the number of turns varies by spring size. A general rule is spring length ÷ wire diameter. Call us for exact specifications.

Check the Cables

While replacing springs, inspect cables for fraying. Worn cables should be replaced at the same time to prevent future issues.

Lubricate Regularly

Apply garage door lubricant (not WD-40) to springs, hinges, and rollers every 6 months. This extends the life of all components.
